An estimated 23% of the UK population classed as obese. The country has the second highest rate of obesity in Europe. Despite this, the provision of weight loss treatments available on the NHS remains restrictive with only one course of orlistat available.
From the privacy and comfort of our consultation room our trained pharmacist at Prescription Care can provide private consultations for the purpose of weight loss. We can offer a choice of two prescription treatments, dependent on the suitability of the patient for each treatment; Orlistat capsules or Saxenda® (commonly referred to as the 'Skinny Jab').
Orlistat
Orlistat is a medicine used to treat obesity. It works in your digestive system to block about one-third of the fat in the food you eat from being digested.
Orlistat attaches to the enzymes in your digestive system (lipases) and blocks them from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten during your meal. The undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is eliminated by your body.
Orlistat is useful in the treatment of obesity in conjunction with a low calorie intake diet.
Saxenda
Saxenda® is a weight loss medicine that contains the active substance liraglutide. It is similar to a natural occurring hormone called GLP-1 that is released from the intestine after a meal.
Saxenda® works by acting on receptors in the brain that control your appetite, causing you to feel fuller and less hungry. This may help you eat less food and reduce your body weight.
